Rook Piercing FAQ

  • Q: How painful is the Rook piercing?
The Rook is a thick, central fold of cartilage. You will feel substantial pressure and a sharp sting, making it moderately painful (6/10). The good news is the procedure is over very quickly.

  • Q: What kind of jewelry is used for a Rook?
We start with a curved barbell or, less commonly, a captive bead ring, made of implant-grade titanium. The anatomy of the fold determines the initial size and type.

  • Q: Can I wear a helmet or hat with a new Rook piercing?
You should avoid any headwear that puts constant pressure on the ear, such as tight helmets, for the first few months. Pressure is detrimental to cartilage healing.

  • Q: The jewelry is difficult to see when cleaning. Is that normal?
Yes, the Rook sits deep inside a fold. You must clean the area gently but thoroughly twice daily, using sterile saline spray to flush the area and non-woven gauze to dry.

Rook Piercing Aftercare

Average Healing Time: 6–18 months.

Cleaning: Clean the piercing twice daily.

Option 1 (Saline): Spray the area with sterile saline solution and gently pat dry with a non-woven gauze pad.

Option 2 (Water): Rinse in the shower with clean, warm running water and pat dry.

Crucial Rule: Sleep Management: NEVER sleep directly on your healing Rook piercing. Use a travel pillow to avoid irritating the jewelry inside the fold.

What to Avoid:

Be gentle when inserting or removing earbuds/headphones on the opposite ear, as movement can travel through the cartilage.

Avoid excessive movement (twisting) of the jewelry.
