Helix Piercing FAQ
Q: Is a Helix piercing painful?
It involves cartilage, so you will feel more pressure than a lobe piercing. It's usually a quick, sharp pain, followed by a dull ache for a few hours. Most clients rate it around 4/10.Q: How long does a Helix piercing take to heal?
Cartilage piercings are slow to heal, typically taking 6 to 12 months, or sometimes longer. Patience and diligence with aftercare, especially avoiding sleeping on it, are key.Q: Can I get a Helix pierced with a ring (hoop)?
We strongly recommend against it. Hoops move excessively, causing constant irritation and increasing the risk of irritation bumps (granulomas). We start all Helix piercings with a straight stud (labret) and switch to a hoop only once it is fully healed.Q: I have a bump forming on my Helix, what is it?
This is most likely an irritation bump (not an infection), often caused by trauma, sleeping on it, or twisting the jewelry. Contact our Auckland studio for a check-up; we can advise on targeted aftercare to resolve it.
Helix Piercing Aftercare
Average Healing Time: 6–12+ months.
Cleaning: Clean the piercing twice daily.
Option 1 (Saline): Spray the area with sterile saline solution and gently pat dry with a non-woven gauze pad.
Option 2 (Water): Rinse in the shower with clean, warm running water and pat dry.
Crucial Rule: Sleep Management: NEVER sleep directly on your healing Helix piercing. Use a donut-shaped travel pillow to keep all pressure off the ear. Pressure is the primary cause of irritation bumps.
What to Avoid:
Avoid snagging the jewelry on hair, hats, or headbands.
Keep hair products, dyes, and sprays away from the piercing.
Do not use earplugs or in-ear headphones on the side with the fresh piercing.
